Arriving in Dubai: business aviation terminals

Airport lounge with tall windows looking onto parked aircraft

A private flight to Dubai ends differently from an airline arrival. There is no long walk to passport control and no baggage hall. But the details still matter, starting with which airport you land at and what you carry through immigration. This note walks through the arrival from the moment the wheels touch down.

Two airports, two characters

Dubai has two airports that handle private aircraft. Dubai International, known by its code DXB, is the city's main airline hub and sits close to Downtown, DIFC, Business Bay and Deira. Al Maktoum International, DWC, lies in Dubai South, toward Jebel Ali, Dubai Marina and Palm Jumeirah, and was designed with room to grow.

Both are open day and night. The right choice depends on where you are staying, the time of year and how long the aircraft will remain. For a short stay in the city centre, DXB can save time on the road. For longer stays, larger aircraft or busy dates, DWC is often simpler. Your advisor will recommend one for your trip.

After landing

The aircraft taxis to the business aviation area rather than an airline gate. Passengers are met and taken through immigration and customs in the private terminal, usually in a matter of minutes when documents are in order. Ground staff move the luggage. If you have asked for a car, it can be arranged to meet you at the terminal; mention it in your request so it can be booked with the handling agent.

Documents

Every passenger needs a passport that remains valid for the whole journey. Visa rules for the UAE depend on nationality: some passports are welcomed with a visa issued on arrival, others need a visa arranged before travel. Requirements change from time to time, so we confirm them for every traveller on your manifest before departure, and the operator submits passenger details in advance as part of its permit.

Customs and what to carry

The UAE has clear rules on what can be brought into the country. Large sums of cash must be declared, and some prescription medicines are restricted or need documentation. If anyone in your party travels with medication, check it before departure rather than at the terminal. Pets need an import permit and vaccination records arranged well ahead, along with the operator's agreement.

Most arrival delays come from paperwork, not aircraft. A complete passenger list, sent early, is the best preparation.

Timing the arrival

Slots shape arrival times at busy periods, particularly at DXB in the winter season. If your plans are fixed, request early so the operator can secure the time you want. Late-evening arrivals are common and often quieter. Remember the time difference: Dubai keeps UTC+4 all year, with no daylight saving, so the gap to Europe changes when European clocks change.

Leaving Dubai

Departure works in reverse: arrive at the business aviation terminal shortly before your planned time, pass through exit formalities there and walk to the aircraft. In summer, operators often prefer departures in the cooler hours, because high afternoon temperatures reduce the weight an aircraft can carry, which matters on long flights back to Europe.

What the handling agent does

Behind every private arrival is a handling agent at the airport. Handlers coordinate the aircraft's parking, fuel, catering and cleaning, liaise with immigration and customs, look after luggage and arrange any cars or porters that have been requested. They also help the crew with their own paperwork and rest arrangements. The operator chooses and pays the handler, and the cost is part of an all-in quote, but it helps to know who will meet you and why your passenger details are needed in advance.

Travelling with children

Children need their own passports and, depending on nationality, their own visas. If a child is travelling with only one parent, or with grandparents or other adults, carry a letter of consent from the absent parent, as officials may ask for it. Let your advisor know the ages of children on board so the operator can prepare suitable seating and catering.

Connecting onward

Dubai is often a stop rather than the end of the journey. If you are continuing to the Maldives, Seychelles or elsewhere, the same aircraft can usually continue after a short stop, or you can switch to a different aircraft better suited to the next leg. Plan the full itinerary in one request so permits, crew duty and timing work across every leg.

Allow for the drive as well. Depending on the time of day, traffic between the business aviation terminals and districts such as Downtown or Dubai Marina can add a good deal of time, so build a margin into departure plans, especially on weekday evenings.

If the aircraft is staying

On a round trip, the aircraft and crew may wait in Dubai. Parking space for private aircraft is limited at DXB in peak season, so an operator may drop you at DXB and park at DWC, or plan the whole trip through DWC. Any repositioning between the two is included in an all-in quote.

An arrival checklist

  • Agree DXB or DWC with your advisor, based on your address and dates.
  • Send full passenger names and passport details as early as possible.
  • Confirm visas for every nationality in the group.
  • Declare any pets, and start their import permit well ahead.
  • Check prescription medicines against UAE rules.
  • Ask for a car at the terminal if you want one, with the address in the city.

In short

Choose the airport by your address and your dates, send a complete passenger list early and tell us about pets, medicines and cars in advance. The rest of the arrival, handled in the private terminal, is the easy part.
